Poverty in contemporary society
Poverty is a condition affecting all societies, even industrialized ones, where it is based on inter-temporal comparison between different social groups.
This course analyses attitudes towards the poor, and how these attitudes influence policies to contrast poverty. It also looks at the way poverty is analyzed and measured. The course is designed for social workers or anyone working in the area of poverty.
The course is structured in three blocks. The first part covers the evolution of the social conditions of the poor over time. In the second part students will look at the research methods and tools that make up the “sociologist’s toolbox”. The last part of the course focuses on the Italian context. The concluding lesson is on the way poverty is represented in the media. The lessons follow a logical and chronological order, but the different blocks, and the last lesson, can also be studied separately.

Sustainable Development Goal 1: No Poverty (CanopyLAB)

Ending poverty is one of the cross-cutting issues of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals because it is related to many other goals on the list such as decent jobs, quality education, and improving infrastructure and access to health care. It is also a cross-cutting issue in the sense that it concerns every country and every person, no matter rich or poor, young or old and any other differences in conditions of life. This is because poverty is not an isolated phenomenon; rather it is a state that anyone could all fall into if there is not a system to protect them. In this course, you will learn about the various forms that poverty can take, and how it can be battled, by the United Nations, governments, companies, humanitarian organizations, and last but not least, you.
