Erland Stevens

Erland teaches organic and medicinal chemistry. His research interests include nitrogen heterocycles, medicinal chemistry, and bioorganic chemistry.
His current research, funded by the National Institutes of Health, is in collaboration with Prof. Wessner and his students in biology. The project examines triazole nucleobases in antiviral nucleoside analogues. Wessner's specialty in the biology of viral infections complements his research in medicinal and bioorganic chemistry.
The project, which has already involved 15 undergraduate researchers, seeks to develop a new method for making anti-viral drugs and testing new drugs for biological activity. Viral diseases, including AIDS, herpes, and certain types of hepatitis, are often treated with drugs that can imitate nucleic acids.
