Marcelo Gleiser is the Appleton Professor of Natural Philosophy and professor of physics and astronomy at Dartmouth College. His research covers a broad spectrum of theoretical physics, from cosmology and particle physics to astrobiology and the emergence of complexity in Nature.
The author of more than 100 refereed articles and dozens of essays in print and digital format, Marcelo’s research focuses on questions of origins: the origin of the Universe, the origin of matter, the origin of life on Earth and elsewhere in the cosmos, and the relationship between complexity and information in natural systems. Marcelo is a fellow of the American Physical Society and a recipient of the Presidential Faculty Fellows Award from the White House and the National Science Foundation.
Marcelo engages tirelessly with the general public as a voice for science. In his five books, essays, and op-eds and as co-founder and contributor of the NPR blog 13.7: Cosmos & Culture, he distinguishes himself as a scientist-humanist, presenting science within a broad cultural, historic, and philosophical context, exploring both its ancient roots and its spiritual role in humanity’s ongoing search for meaning.
