Numeracy Skills for Employability and the Workplace (FutureLearn)

Numeracy Skills for Employability and the Workplace (FutureLearn)

Improve your mathematical confidence and gain the skills to pass employers’ numeracy tests with this free online course. In our highly technical world numeracy skills, particularly the ability to interpret data, are becoming increasingly important and are highly sought after by employers. A lack of mathematical confidence and poor numeracy skills are barriers to employment as numeracy tests are increasingly part of the recruitment process, often early on.

Many people feel that they just simply “cannot do maths” yet the need to process numbers is a skill that we all need not just for employment but in our everyday lives.

Improve or revise your knowledge of mathematics
This free online course from the Mathematics Education Centre at Loughborough University will help you improve or revise your knowledge of mathematics. You will gain the numeracy skills needed to succeed in both employers’ numeracy tests and the workplace. It is designed to build your confidence.
Over three weeks, we will look at where numbers occur in everyday life and what numeracy means in this context. We will look at the rationale behind employers’ numeracy testing and the skills you will need to be successful.
In addition to refreshing your understanding of specific numeracy skills (such as percentages, ratios, averages and currency conversions), you will develop essential skills for interpreting numerical data and understanding statistics.

Build your mathematical confidence

The course will develop your skills through a carefully paced, step-by-step introduction to relevant topics with opportunities to check your understanding through quizzes. There will be feedback at every stage.
Completing this course will help you build your mathematical confidence and prepare you for both employers’ numeracy testing and using numeracy in the workplace.

Calculus through Data & Modelling: Integration Applications (Coursera)

This course continues your study of calculus by focusing on the applications of integration. The applications in this section have many common features. First, each is an example of a quantity that is computed by evaluating a definite integral. Second, the formula for that application is derived from Riemann sums. Rather than measure rates of change as we did with differential calculus, the definite integral allows us to measure the accumulation of a quantity over some interval of input values.

Combinatorics: Strategies and Methods for Counting (FutureLearn)

Explore the wonderful world of combinatorics with this course exploring simple and efficient ways to count. See combinatorics made simple and how to avoid errors in counting principles. Combinatorics is an area of mathematics primarily concerned with counting. Combinatorial problems arise in many areas of pure mathematics, notably in algebra, probability theory, topology, and geometry. On this free online combinatorics course, you’ll discover a simple and efficient method to translate a combinatorial problem into counting the elements of a reference mathematical structure.

Linear Regression and Modeling (Coursera)

This course introduces simple and multiple linear regression models. These models allow you to assess the relationship between variables in a data set and a continuous response variable. Is there a relationship between the physical attractiveness of a professor and their student evaluation scores? Can we predict the test score for a child based on certain characteristics of his or her mother? In this course, you will learn the fundamental theory behind linear regression and, through data examples, learn to fit, examine, and utilize regression models to examine relationships between multiple variables, using the free statistical software R and RStudio.
