This course gives an introduction to fluid mechanics. We will first discuss the physical properties of fluids: the states of matter, the definition of viscosity, surface tension and capillarity. We will then introduce the concept of similarity and the use of dimensionless numbers. We will then consider hydrostatics, followed by kinematics. Then, we will deal with balance equations, including an application of the conservation of kinetic energy: the Bernoulli theorem. In the last chapter, we will show that this relatively simple theorem allows describing river flows. The lecture videos will be complemented by videos of experiments and formative tests. This module will also allow you to control remotely a hydraulic experiment at the EPFL laboratories.

What you'll learn:

The Basics of Transport Phenomena (edX)

Learn the basic framework to work on a broad spectrum of engineering problems concerning transfer of heat, mass and momentum. Learn through examples of everyday processes at home, in the lab and in industry. Have you ever wondered why ventilation helps to cool down your hot chocolate? Do you know why a surfing suit keeps you warm? Why iron feels cold, while wood feels warm at room temperature? Or how air is transferred into aqueous liquids in a water treatment plant? How can we sterilize milk with the least amount of energy? How does medicine spread in our tissue? Or how do we design a new cooling tower of a power plant? All these are phenomena that involve heat transfer, mass transfer or fluid flow.

Cement Chemistry and Sustainable Cementitious Materials (edX)

Learn the basics of cement chemistry and laboratory best practices for assessment of its key properties. Every day, we see concrete used all around us – to build our houses, offices, schools, bridges, and infrastructure. But few people actually understand what gives concrete its strength, resistance, and utility. The aim of this course is to offer basic cement chemistry to practitioners, as well as new students in the fields of chemistry and engineering.
