How We See the World: Visual Function and Eye Health (edX)

Develop your understanding of vision and discover how visual functions relate to your daily life. Learn and apply techniques to help you take better care of your eyes. How do we see the world? How do we see details at different viewing distances? How do we see in three dimensions? How do we see colour? How can we avoid getting cataracts or prevent short-sightedness? This course will help you develop your understanding of vision, how visual functions relate to your daily life, and how you can better take care of your eyes.

Spanning six modules and with content aimed at both optometry specialists and the general public, the course begins with a detailed look at the structures and functions of the eye. It then moves on to explore critical issues such as the limits of the eye’s resolution, depth perception and colour vision, before examining the impact of common eye problems on daily life and outlining strategies for improving eye health.
Engage with content and fellow learners through videos, animations, hands-on experiments and forum discussions, and check your understanding through quizzes and peer-assessed tasks at the end of each module. Learners who pursue the verified track gain access to a complete 3D eye model, virtual labs, live sessions and detailed instructor feedback on assessment.

What you'll learn
By the end of this course youll be able to:

  • identify and describe the basic structures and functions of the eye
  • explain and measure the resolution capability of the human eye
  • explain how the two eyes and brain work together to perceive depth
  • demonstrate how humans see colour by detecting different wavelengths of light
  • describe how the eye and vision are affected by common eye problems
  • apply techniques to protect your eyes from preventable vision problems.

Syllabus

Module 1: Structures and functions of the eye
Learn about the structures and functions of the eye. Discover how the eye focuses and captures images of the world, and how it converts light into a signal that travels to the brain for processing. Explore the movements and shape of the eye, and the structures that help to protect it.

Module 2: The resolution of the eye
Learn about the resolution capability of the human eye and how you see fine detail. Discover the characteristics of the eye chart used to measure vision and what it means to see 20/20.

Module 3: Depth perception
Learn how the two eyes and brain work together to perceive depth and what happens when this system doesn't function properly. Discover how you perceive depth in two-dimensional photos or drawings.

Module 4: Colour vision
Learn how humans see colour by detecting different wavelengths of light. Discover what happens when you add different colours of light together. Find out how people with colour vision deficiency see the world differently.

Module 5: Common eye conditions
Explore the types of refractive error and how they can be corrected with glasses, contact lenses or surgery. Learn about the signs, symptoms, diagnosis and treatment of common eye diseases including cataracts, glaucoma and macular degeneration.

Module 6: How to protect your eyes
Find out how to protect your eyes from preventable vision problems including sun damage and sports-related injuries. Learn about ways to prevent eye strain when using digital devices. Discover the methods being used to slow the progression of short-sightedness (near-sightedness) in children.

Generating Vision: Long-Term Big Ideas That Motivate Employees and Stakeholders (edX)

The “why movement” linked to crafting purpose and mission statements is now being supplanted by the emerging “where movement.” This movement goes beyond brainstorming towards declaring the “big ideas” that will inspire stakeholders. “Where are we going?” as an organization is the primal question posed by employees that CEOs and product managers must smartly address. This course will teach you how.

Planetary Boundaries (edX)

Can our planet continue to support the current scope of human activity? A thriving global society relies on the stability of the Earth and its resilience across oceans, forests, waterways, biodiversity, the atmosphere and more. So how do we shape sustainability at a global scale? The boundaries set by the planet’s natural resources, the resilience of those resources, and the human activities that impact sustainability all come into play.

Visual Perception and Visual Illusions (Coursera)

Vision is one of the main ways for us to gather information about the world around us and about ourselves. Thus, studying vision naturally leads to new hypotheses on how cognition works. This way, our course on visual perception will also provide you with knowledge on cerebral mechanisms of vision, sensory systems and, in general, on how the mind and consciousness work. This course is aimed at everyone who is interested in perceptual psychology, in particular, psychology of visual perception.

Through Engineers' Eyes - Introducing the Vision: Engineering Mechanics by Experiment, Analysis and Design (FutureLearn)

Learn the basic techniques of engineering mechanics and use them to interpret experiments and make designs that will work. When you design anything, how do you know that the design will work? Engineering mechanics is the science-based analysis that engineers use to predict how their designs will perform. It is vital to ensure engineers can meet their responsibilities for performance and safety.

The structure, annotation, normalization, and interpretation of genome scale assays. We begin with an introduction to the biology, explaining what we measure and why. Then we focus on the two main measurement technologies: next generation sequencing and microarrays. We then move on to describing how raw data and experimental information are imported into R and how we use Bioconductor classes to organize these data, whether generated locally, or harvested from public repositories or institutional archives.

Learn about the Earth, life, and how we can search for life elsewhere in the universe. Are we alone in this universe? What new information and observations on exoplanets have we discovered? In the past decade, astronomers have made incredible advances in the discovery of planets outside our solar system. Thirty years ago, we knew only of the planets in our own solar system. Now we know of thousands circling nearby stars.
