Learn how to paint bamboo using Chinese painting techniques. Bamboo is a classic subject in Chinese painting and one of the “Four Gentlemen” (四君子) in Chinese art. The others are the plum blossom, the orchid, and the chrysanthemum. Comment if you want to see a video of one of these! This is a free class for beginners taught by Ashley Liu. In this part 1 you will learn all of the basics of painting the leaves, the pole, and other details. Follow along as I walk you through step by step instructions.

Techniques covered in this class:

  • 中鋒行筆 vertical stroke
  • 側鋒行筆 stroke with the side of the brush
  • 壓筆 press the brush
  • 提筆 lift the brush
  • 掃鋒 sweep the brush

For materials you'll need:

  • 1 mid sized weasel hair brush and 1 thin brush
  • Chinese ink
  • A pencil for sketching
  • Rice paper.

After this class you should use your mid-sized brush to paint leaves and the pole, Make sure to practice and use sweep strokes.
