La mayor parte de los trastornos mentales tienen su inicio antes de los 25 años, al igual que el consumo y abuso de sustancias psicoactivas, lo cual hace que esta etapa del curso de vida sea crucial para la promoción y la prevención.

A pesar de lo anterior, los adolescentes y jóvenes no suelen asistir a los servicios de salud mental tradicionales y prefieren consultar primero en otras fuentes antes de acceder a ayuda de profesionales.
Este curso aborda el problema que resulta de la relación entre una preocupante y compleja situación en el campo de la salud mental en la adolescencia y la juventud, y la limitada respuesta y escasez de servicios de todo tipo, desde los asistenciales hasta los de orientación y apoyo para esta etapa. Teniendo en cuenta lo anterior, se hace evidente la necesidad de aumentar los conocimientos y las capacidades de los profesionales de la salud en el cuidado primario ya que una oportuna y efectiva respuesta a este nivel conduce a mejores desenlaces en la salud mental del adolescente de hoy y del adulto futuro.
Dentro del curso el estudiante explorará con un enfoque dimensional la adolescencia, desde sus representaciones normales y cambios psíquicos. Aprenderá a diferenciar las manifestaciones esperables y diferenciarlas de los problemas y trastornos en salud mental. El estudiante adquirirá herramientas prácticas para su identificación, manejo y seguimiento.
