Building STEM Afterschool Mobile Makerspace Programs (Canvas net)

This course is designed to help you create after-school mobile makerspace programs for K-12 students. It provides access to free NASA educational resources, including short, yet targeted PBL (problem-based learning) activities.

As a participant in this course, you’ll learn how to:

  • Build an EXTREME Weather Makerspace, SolarSolv Makerspace, and Habitat Makerspace environment using free resources.
  • Use a STEAM (science, technology, art, and math) framework to map creative approaches to core content needs.
  • Implement 3D printing software programs, computational thinking activities, green screen, and other STEM programs.
  • Connect with top scientists, educators, engineers, artists, and community organizers to share best practices for achieving community buy-in.
  • Identify funding opportunities and gain insights about how to connect your organization's makerspace to community partners.

This course will show you how to build a massive open online course (MOOC), including lots of tips and tricks, at an affordable cost. It covers content creation and content sourcing from the web, assessment at large scale using quizzes and peer assignments, communication between learners and course design. Depending on your level of interest, it will require between two and four hours of effort per week. This course will focus on four themes directly related to the education of girls worldwide: (1) access and equity, (2) public health, (3) education in emergencies, and (4) empowerment. We will examine (a) research: the data around the education of girls, as well as analyses, images, and stories; (b) relationship: how new learning about girls’ education relates to our practice; and (c) results: the capacity to make a measurable difference in and for our classrooms, our communities, and the world.
