However, these new technologies pose many ethical concerns, decision dilemmas and policy challenges. These include aspects like privacy, surveillance, transparency, accountability, human control and the related design requirements. It is equally unclear what the implications for governance and regulation may be.

In this course, you will learn to consider ethics as an essential element in the developmental process. With the frameworks offered, you will be able to reflect on a diverse range of ethical issues related to AI, e.g., how to make sure that AI is trustworthy and meets societal needs. We will also discuss the design principles that developers can deploy to ensure the responsible design and use of AI.
The course includes a large number of case studies that involve the dilemmas, risks and unintended and unexpected consequences of AI and robotics. These case studies range from the care robots that respond to human emotions, the use of AI for recruitment of staff, the use of voice assistants at home through to the use of autonomous weapons.
This course will provide you with a comprehensive range of learning resources on this important topic, including interviews with leading experts in this field. This course is a spin-off from "The Mind of the Universe" a documentary series created by the Dutch broadcasting company VPRO and professor Robbert Dijkgraaf of Princeton University.

What you'll learn

  • To articulate the ethical questions and concerns regarding AI and robotics,
  • To reflect on the relevant design requirements,
  • To identify governance and regulatory issues,
  • To express a very nuanced point of view towards the issue of AI and robotics in society in various domains.

Tech for Good: The Role of ICT in Achieving the SDGs (edX)

What opportunities and challenges do digital technologies present for the development of our society? Tech for Good was developed by UNESCO and Cetic, the Brazilian Network Information Center’s Regional Center for Studies on the Development of the Information Society. It brings together thought leaders and changemakers in the fields of information and communication technologies (ICT) and sustainable development to show how digital technologies are empowering billions of people around the world by providing access to education, healthcare, banking, and government services; and how “big data” is being used to inform smarter, evidence-based policies to improve people’s lives in fundamental ways.

Data Science Ethics (edX)

Learn how to think through the ethics surrounding privacy, data sharing, and algorithmic decision-making. As patients, we care about the privacy of our medical record; but as patients, we also wish to benefit from the analysis of data in medical records. As citizens, we want a fair trial before being punished for a crime; but as citizens, we want to stop terrorists before they attack us. As decision-makers, we value the advice we get from data-driven algorithms; but as decision-makers, we also worry about unintended bias.
