Acrylic Painting: Landscapes for Beginners Using References Photos (Skillshare)

In this class, you will see and learn how to paint with a landscape painting with a reference photo. Not only learn how to paint a landscape using a reference photo but add your own elements of your style and skill to your piece. This class is intended for all levels but mostly for beginners learning how to paint landscapes while using a reference photo and intermediate looking for more practice with different landscapes.

This class is also intended for you to not only understand my techniques of painting but also discover your own unique way of painting. This class is meant for you to get some practice even if it’s your first painting or your 100th and learn more about how you paint and what makes you comfortable.

What I want you to take away from this class:

  • The confidence to paint a landscape
  • How to paint a landscape
  • Learn how to break down a reference photo for painting a landscape
  • Rule of three for colors to create dimension to your piece
  • Be patient with yourself and practice

Lastly, I want you all to have fun while you’re painting and I hope you learn something!

Materials:
I'm using water color paper to paint on, size 11x15. You can use the brand I'm using but I prefer XL Canson paper. White gesso for priming the paper. I will be using a combination of Liquitex basic, Liquitex heavy body, and Golden acrylics for this painting. These paints that I’m using are the actual paints that I use for all my paintings. For sketches, practice, and for the paintings that I sell. My personal choice is Liquitex Heavy Body Artist Acrylic Paint, because it’s cheaper but also very heavy and opaque. You can use whatever brand you would like! Liquitex makes a series called basic where you have plenty of choices for colors but at the fraction of the price. Below is a photo of all the colors we will be using for this class.
For the brushes I have a large collection and I pick and choose my brushes as I go but here is a picture of all the brushes I used for this class. I don't have brand loyal I usually buy packs of brushes with a variety of brushes. All of my brushes are pretty old and bought all over the place and gifted for me but check your local art store or Michaels. Miscellaneous materials include: blue tape, ruler, and a colored pencil
