Professor Gaitonde received his BTech and PhD degrees from IIT Bombay. After a three-year stint in industry, he joined the faculty of IIT Bombay in 1980. His research interests are in heat transfer, power-plant dynamics, and safety studies.
He takes particular interest in teaching thermodynamics, has developed a neat teaching methodology, and has conducted two workshops for teachers in India using ICT.
