Sally Santen

Sally Santen, M.D., Ph.D., is Assistant Dean for Educational Research and Quality Improvement in the Medical School and Associate Chair of Education in the Department of Emergency Medicine. She also is an Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine and Medical Education.
Her primary work is in the Medical School, where she leads curriculum development, and student assessment and evaluation, in addition to leading the Emergency Medicine educational mission with fellows, residents and students. Her areas of research include assessment, evaluation, burnout, resiliency and entrustment.
Dr. Santen earned her M.D. from the George Washington University School of Medicine, and completed a residency in emergency medicine at the George Washington/Georgetown hospitals. She received her Ph.D. from the Vanderbilt Peabody School of Education.
Dr. Santen came to the U-M in 2011 from Emory University, where she was an associate professor of emergency medicine and assistant dean with the responsibility of measuring longitudinal learning outcomes for the new curriculum. She also spent 13 years at Vanderbilt University as an assistant residency director, then clerkship director, and associate professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine and the Office of Teaching and Learning in Medicine.
