Richard Peto

Sir Richard wanted his position at the University of Oxford to be called Professor of Big Numbers, but ended up with Professor of Medical Statistics and Epidemiology. Since 1985, he has been co-director of the Clinical Trial Service Unit. His work focuses on the classic causes of chronic disease, particularly the effects of smoking, and the conduct and interpretation of large-scale studies to reliably assess treatment effects. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of London in 1989, and was knighted in 1999 for services to epidemiology and to cancer prevention.
