Stewart Memorial Professor of Biosciences
Matthews received her Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley and joined the faculty at Rice University following post-doctoral work at Stanford. She has served as Department Chair and as Dean of the Wiess School of Natural Sciences at Rice. Three-time recipient of the George R. Brown Award for Superior Teaching, Matthews also received the Nicolas Salgo Distinguished Teacher Award and was in the first cadre of Fellows of the Rice Center for Teaching Excellence. Matthews’ research program focuses on structure/function relationships in genetic regulatory proteins. Active in multiple professional organizations, she has served in a variety of editorial roles and is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
