Byoung-Joo Kim

Professor Byoung-Joo Kim teaches politics of development at the KDI School with a focus on how democracy, participation and mobilization affects the political economy of development. Professor Kim’s research interests also include cooperation and institution building in the global context. For nearly two decades, he has taught in an adjunct role at Korea’s leading universities, such as Hankuk University of Foreign Studies. Since 2003, he has also headed a consulting firm, Kim, Lee & Partners (KL&P) that advises international corporations, government and public organizations on political-economic and policy-regulatory affairs since 2003. Prior to his career in consulting, Professor Kim was a diplomat serving two of Korea's Trade Ministers as the Policy Counsellor and Special Assistant. Before joining the Korean government, he represented Korean business interests as a registered foreign trade lobbyist in Washington, D.C. His Washington career began as a consultant researcher at the World Bank specializing in East Asian development. Byoung-Joo Kim received his Ph.D. in the U.S. from M.I.T.'s Department of Political Science and B.A. with Honors in Economics, Political Science and International Relations from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
