Alec Engebretson

Alec Engebretson is a Professor of Computing at Doane University. At Doane since 1990, he has extensive experience teaching a number of courses and supervising a variety of projects including many related to software development. Dr. Engebretson considers himself an educator who happens to have a knack for computing. As an educator, he is constantly learning and applying effective best practices in learning.
Dr. Engebretson has served Doane in a number of capacities during his tenure at the university including co-founder of the Nebraska Dev Lab (NeDL) which provides professional software developer training, inaugural director of the Institute for Computing at Doane which provides students support and alumni connections for their computing needs, co-creator and director of the Doane Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL) which provides faculty development opportunities, chair of the computer science department, chair of the science division, assistant dean of special projects, interim chair of the online program, interim chair of the art department, chair of the general education revision task force, chair of the faculty governance revision task force, sponsor of a fraternity, sponsor of the computer club, and assistant coach of the women’s basketball team.
Prior to Doane, Professor Engebretson was trained and worked five years as a systems engineer for IBM in Des Moines, IA. He received both his Masters and Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Nebraska Lincoln. The focus of his research was end-user programming.
