Promoting and Protecting Human Rights: a Global Overview (GCHumanRights)

In times of violence and crisis, human rights are important safeguards. In times of peace, security and development, they are important pillars sustaining our common humanity. They are more than moral or legal concepts: they are the lymph of our lives. For them to run effectively, we need to relentlessly promote and protect them. This course provides you with a solid basis to understand, know and stand up for human rights.

The MOOC is articulated in 2 modules:
Module 1 (two classes) focuses on the international framework of human rights promotion and protection and is recommended for all participants.
Module 2 (five classes) is dedicated to regional perspectives on the standards, mechanisms, benefits and challenges in five regions of the world: Africa, the Americas, the Arab World, Asia Pacific, and Europe. This module is elective and can be composed of minimum 1 and maximum 5 classes.

Upon completion of this course participants will have gained:

  • Knowledge about key historical, philosophical and legal developments
  • Understanding of progress and obstacles (overtime and current)
  • Ability to identify multi-faceted aspects (pros and cons)
  • Understanding of international legal frameworks, mechanisms and challenges
  • Capacity to discuss specific areas and groups/cases of concern

Bienestar, equidad y derechos humanos (Coursera)

Business and Human Rights (GCHumanRights)

Business and human rights are still often seen in opposition: companies hardly value the human toll of their profitable production; governments often fail to protect business-related human rights defenders. But responsible businesses can prevent potential damages and offer space for accountability and redress. States regulations and policies can shape business behaviour and help ensure human rights protection.

Counter Human Trafficking in Southeast Asia (SEA) (GCHumanRights)

Human trafficking is often described as the new form of slavery for the 21st century. Despite difficulties in collecting data, recent analyses confirm that it is a serious and ongoing problem in many areas and much still needs to be done to prevent it, protect victims and ultimately eradicate it. In recent years, work has been carried out on the impact of counter trafficking, but more is needed on counter trafficking itself. This online course is going to examine the programmes, practices and activities of counter trafficking by analysing aspects such as raids and rescues, litigation, organising, education. In particular, it will do so by looking at the specific case of South-East Asia (SEA).

Terrorism and Counterterrorism: Comparing Theory and Practice (Coursera)

Terrorism has arguably been one of the defining factors of our age. It frequently makes headlines, threatening or attacking governments, private business and ordinary citizens. And in many parts of the world, it has been one of the most important threats to peace, security and stability. But what does this exactly mean? What is the nature of this threat? Who or what is threatened, how, by whom and why? What can be done about it or how can we at least limit the impact of terrorism and make sure that terrorists do not make headlines and manage to scare us? These are just a handful of questions that will be addressed in this course that consists of three parts.
