Mindfulness Through Film (FutureLearn)

Explore how film watching and filmmaking can be used in secondary teaching to introduce mindfulness principles and exercises.  Support students' mental health through the power of film. Created in partnership with the Mental Health Foundation, this course includes a variety of film-based strategies to enable you and your learners to confidently engage with mindfulness. Discover how film can help you tap into the mental health benefits of mindfulness, such as enhancing focus, promoting self-regulation, increasing resilience, and improving interpersonal skills.

Along the way, we’ll give you practical advice on how to deliver these activities, and provide you with techniques to promote greater wellbeing. Throughout the course, you will be able to share learning experiences with fellow educators and gain access to free downloadable lesson resources that will equip you with everything you need to get started with your students.

What will you achieve?
By the end of the course, you‘ll be able to...

  • Explore mindfulness and other strategies to help students acknowledge their thoughts and feelings, learning how to respond to them productively.
  • Engage with stills and clips from youth-made and short films to support learning about managing mental and emotional health.
  • Create simple films and transfer these skills to students, to encourage creativity, promote personal expression and strengthen communication skills .
  • Reflect on how to take time out to care for our own mental wellbeing. 

Who is the course for?
This course is aimed at secondary school educators, but teachers of all ages will find will find the course helpful in supporting their learners’ wellbeing and creativity.
