Курс рассматривает развитие медиасистем в контексте развития обществ преимущественно с момента появления национальных государств в середине 2 тысячелетия н.э. до настоящего момента и демонстрирует роль, которую играют медиа в формировании национальных государств, капиталистической экономики и участия населения в политике.
Вторая часть курса посвящена рассмотрению теоретических подходов к изучению медиа и коммуникаций.
