The course Health Care and Promotion for Infants and Toddlers provides a comprehensive and detailed overview of cutting-edge knowledge, new concepts and practical skills in early childhood health care, including the growth and development of newborns, infants, and toddlers, daily parenting, and early childhood development and education.

Additionally, it introduces the prevention and treatment of common infectious diseases. The contents concerning management of common health problems in infants and toddlers are also provided.
The course content was developed based on authoritative textbooks (in English and Chinese), guidelines from home and abroad, and relevant policies of international health organizations. It incorporates child care concepts commonly recommended by international academia and practitioners, while introducing new trends in the discipline to its learners and cultivating their global perspective and evidence-based thinking.
The instructors of the course are healthcare professionals and scholars with international perspectives and extensive experience in child healthcare.
Through lectures, videos-watching, assignments, quizzes, case studies, discussions, and other forms of learning, this course helps the learners understand the basic theory and latest concepts of infant and toddler health care and to master relevant nursing techniques and coping skills.
This course is primarily aimed at undergraduate students majoring in children’s health care and nursing. Maternal and child healthcare providers, babysitters, parents, and other caregivers who are interested in this topic are also welcome to participate in this course.

Syllabus

Unit 1 Neonatal health care (1)
This unit covers characteristics of newborns, newborn daily parenting, breastfeeding, and supplementary feeding.

Unit 2 Neonatal health care (2)
This unit covers kangaroo mother care, neonatal jaundice, and special physiological manifestations in neonates.

Unit 3 Infant health care
This unit addresses the infant feeding, neuropsychological development of infants and the promotion, motor development of infants and the promotion, language development of infants and the promotion.

Unit 4 The toddler’s health care
Here, you will learn the characteristics of toddlers (e.g., physiologic function, language and motor development, psychosocial development); care of toddlers (e.g., nutritional requirements and feeding, toilet training), and dental health.

Unit 5 Early childhood development
In this unit, we will learn the assessment of development, early childhood development promotion, play, and physical exercise.

Unit 6 Childhood vaccination
Next, we turn our attention to the immunization program and the procedure of vaccination; we will also consider how to cope with vaccination reactions.

Unit 7 Prevention and treatment of common infectious diseases in childhood
The unit introduces measles, chickenpox and neonatal syphilis.

Unit 8 Management of common health problems in childhood (1)
In this unit, you will learn foreign body airway obstruction, fever, pneumonia and diarrhea.

Unit 9 Management of common health problems in childhood (2)
In this unit, you will learn health problems related to nutrition, including iron deficiency anemia, vitamin D deficiency rickets, obesity and malnutrition.
