Fundamentals of Statistics (edX)

Offered by MIT, MITx,
Fundamentals of Statistics (edX)

Develop a deep understanding of the principles that underpin statistical inference: estimation, hypothesis testing and prediction. Statistics is the science of turning data into insights and ultimately decisions. Behind recent advances in machine learning, data science and artificial intelligence are fundamental statistical principles. The purpose of this class is to develop and understand these core ideas on firm mathematical grounds starting from the construction of estimators and tests, as well as an analysis of their asymptotic performance.

After developing basic tools to handle parametric models, we will explore how to answer more advanced questions, such as the following:

  • How suitable is a given model for a particular dataset?
  • How to select variables in linear regression?
  • How to model nonlinear phenomena?
  • How to visualize high-dimensional data?

Taking this class will allow you to expand your statistical knowledge to not only include a list of methods, but also the mathematical principles that link them together, equipping you with the tools you need to develop new ones.
This course is part of the MITx MicroMasters Program in Statistics and Data Science.

What you'll learn

  • Construct estimators using method of moments and maximum likelihood, and decide how to choose between them
  • Quantify uncertainty using confidence intervals and hypothesis testing
  • Choose between different models using goodness of fit test
  • Make prediction using linear, nonlinear and generalized linear models
  • Perform dimension reduction using principal component analysis (PCA)

Probability and Statistics in Data Science using Python (edX)

Using Python, learn statistical and probabilistic approaches to understand and gain insights from data. The job of a data scientist is to glean knowledge from complex and noisy datasets. Reasoning about uncertainty is inherent in the analysis of noisy data. Probability and Statistics provide the mathematical foundation for such reasoning.

Predictive Analytics (edX)

Master the tools of predictive analytics in this statistics based analytics course. Decision makers often struggle with questions such as: What should be the right price for a product? Which customer is likely to default in his/her loan repayment? Which products should be recommended to an existing customer? Finding right answers to these questions can be challenging yet rewarding.

Probability - The Science of Uncertainty and Data (edX)

Build foundational knowledge of data science with this introduction to probabilistic models, including random processes and the basic elements of statistical inference. The world is full of uncertainty: accidents, storms, unruly financial markets, noisy communications. The world is also full of data. Probabilistic modeling and the related field of statistical inference are the keys to analyzing data and making scientifically sound predictions.

Advanced statistical physics (edX)

We explore statistical physics in both classical and open quantum systems. Additionally, we will cover probabilistic data analysis that is extremely useful in many applications. This course covers non-equilibrium statistical processes and the treatment of fluctuation dissipation relations by Einstein, Boltzmann and Kubo. Moreover, the fundamentals of Markov processes, stochastic differential and Fokker Planck equations, mesoscopic master equation, etc will be treated in detail. Prior knowledge of statistical physics is highly recommended but not required.

Introduction to Linear Models and Matrix Algebra (edX)

Learn to use R programming to apply linear models to analyze data in life sciences. Matrix Algebra underlies many of the current tools for experimental design and the analysis of high-dimensional data. In this introductory data analysis course, we will use matrix algebra to represent the linear models that commonly used to model differences between experimental units. We perform statistical inference on these differences. Throughout the course we will use the R programming language.
