The Creative Leader (Coursera)

This aims primarily at post-baccalaureate students interested in leadership theory. This is one course in the Coursera specialization, Leadership: An Introduction. It examines current trends in leadership theory invoking several disciplines, including business, sociology, philosophy, history, and psychology.

The course has four modules. Module 1 covers definitions and foundations of creative leadership. Topics include, What is creative leadership? Why creative leadership? And foundations of creative leadership. Module 2 addresses the facilitative functions of the creative leader. Topics include employee creativity on an individual level; employee creativity and team complexity; and employee creativity and team diversity. Module 3 addresses the directive functions of the creative leader. Topics include directive creative leaders in politics; directive creative leaders in haute cuisine; and directive creative leaders in the arts. Module 4 addresses the integrative functions of the creative leader. Topics include integrative creative leadership and final creative products; and integrative leadership and others’ individual creative products
To complete this course successfully students should be able to analyze college-level readings and audio/visual presentations into understandable parts, including premises and conclusions; synthesize the results of the analysis into coherent and accurate summaries; and evaluate the results for accuracy and practical applicability.

Syllabus

WEEK 1
Definitions and Foundations of Creative Leadership
Module 1 -- Course Introduction and definitions and foundations of creative leadership -- includes a video introduction to the course; a video introduction to the module, plus an accompanying YouTube video; and three lessons. Lesson 1 – What is Creative Leadership? -- includes three readings, one recommended video, four recommended readings, and three lectures. Lesson 2 – Why Creative Leadership?--includes one additional reading, and two lectures. Lesson 3 – Foundations of Creative Leadership -- includes two additional readings and four lectures. The work you will do for this module includes watching the course introduction, the module introduction (including the accompanying video), one recommended video from the internet, and nine lecture videos; reading seven items (not counting four recommended readings); and taking a brief quiz after each lecture, and a longer assessment at the end of the module.

WEEK 2
Facilitative Creative Leadership
Module 2 – Facilitative Creative Leadership -- includes a video introduction to the module, plus an accompanying YouTube video; and three lessons. Lesson 1 – Individual Creativity -- includes five readings, one recommended video, three recommended readings, and two lectures. Lesson 2 – Team Complexity--includes one additional reading, and two lectures. Lesson 3 – Team Diversity -- includes two readings, one recommended reading, and two lectures. The work you will do for this module includes watching the module introduction (including the accompanying video), one recommended video from the internet, and five lecture videos; reading eight items (not counting five recommended readings); and taking a brief quiz after each lecture, and a longer assessment at the end of the module.

WEEK 3
Directive Creative Leadership
Module 3– Directive Creative Leadership -- includes a video introduction to the module, plus an accompanying YouTube video; and two lessons. Lesson 1 – Directive Creative Leadership in General -- includes three readings, one recommended reading, and three lectures. Lesson 2 – Creative Leadership in Haute Cuisine--includes one additional reading, two recommended readings, and two lectures. The work you will do for this module includes watching the module introduction (including the accompanying video) and five lecture videos; reading four items (not counting three recommended readings); and taking a brief quiz after each lecture, and a longer assessment at the end of the module.

WEEK 4
Integrative Creative Leadership
Module 4– Integrative Creative Leadership -- includes a video introduction to the module, plus an accompanying YouTube video; and two lessons. Lesson 1 – Integrative Creative Leadership and Final Creative Products -- includes two readings, two recommended reading, and two lectures. Lesson 2 – Integrative Creative Leadership and Others’ Individual Creative Products--includes three readings, three recommended readings, and two lectures. The work you will do for this module includes watching the module introduction (including the accompanying video) and four lecture videos; reading five items (not counting five recommended readings); and taking a brief quiz after each lecture, and a longer assessment at the end of the module.
