Antimicrobial Stewardship: Managing Antibiotic Resistance (FutureLearn)

Understand antibiotic resistance, and how antimicrobial stewardship can slow down or reduce it, with this free online course. Antimicrobial stewardship is a fast-growing field that aims to address this issue by managing our use of antibiotics to slow down or reduce the occurrence of antimicrobial resistance. Designed for healthcare professionals, this six-week course will inform you about - and empower you to provide - safe, high-quality antibiotic use.

What topics will you cover?

  • Antibiotic Resistance and its global impact
  • The relationship between antibiotic resistance and prescribing
  • What antimicrobial stewardship is and how it can be implemented in a hospital setting
  • Why measurement is important in stewardship: how it can improve antibiotic prescribing
  • How novel diagnostics can help in clinical decision making for antibiotic prescribing
  • An understanding of the value of Behaviour Change Science to improve antibiotic prescribing
  • Examples of successful antibiotic stewardship from across the globe

What will you achieve?
By the end of the course, you'll be able to...

  • Assess the threat of antibiotic resistance in the learner's location and to their practice
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of using certain strategies/tools/interventions in antimicrobial stewardship to drive improvement in learner's location and practice
  • Understand the value of measurement in antimicrobial stewardship: how to calculate DDDs and use Point - Prevalence Surveys, have begun to determine how to use these in their location and practice to drive improvements in antibiotic prescribing
  • Assess the value of novel diagnostics to clinical decision making for optimal antibiotic prescribing
  • Understand the value of Behaviour Change Science to successful antimicrobial stewardship: by assessing issues around culture and context learners will explore how you can apply this evidence in their own setting
  • Examples of successful antimicrobial stewardship implementation from across the globe will be provided and learners encouraged to assess the value of these for their own location and practice

Antibiotic Resistance: the Silent Tsunami (FutureLearn)

Understand antibiotic resistance and what actions are needed to address this increasingly serious global health threat. The introduction of the first antibiotic in the 1940s marks a true turning point in human history. For the first time, once deadly infectious diseases, such as pneumonia and bloodstream infections, became manageable health problems and new horizons for modern medicine were defined. The marketing of other antibiotics soon followed, and as a result of their initial success, bacterial infections were considered to be permanently defeated.

Bacterial Genomes: Antimicrobial Resistance in Bacterial Pathogens (FutureLearn)

What's antimicrobial resistance and how can we detect it? Explore the clinical relevance of AMR and the methods used to detect it. Explore the challenges of AMR and learn how experts work to address them. AMR is a public health emergency. Global projections predict the loss of nearly 10 million lives and up to $100 trillion lost in global production by 2050. According to the United Nations and the WHO, AMR requires immediate international action. On this course, you will explore the historical and epidemiological aspects of antibiotics and AMR, and recognise its clinical significance.

Antibióticos ¿cuándo, cómo y para qué? (Coursera)

Genome Sequencing (Bioinformatics II) (Coursera)

You may have heard a lot about genome sequencing and its potential to usher in an era of personalized medicine, but what does it mean to sequence a genome? Biologists still cannot read the nucleotides of an entire genome as you would read a book from beginning to end. However, they can read short pieces of DNA. In this course, we will see how graph theory can be used to assemble genomes from these short pieces. We will further learn about brute force algorithms and apply them to sequencing mini-proteins called antibiotics.

Responsible Use of Antibiotics (Doctrina)

The 3-part e-learning module about responsible use of antibiotics gives you a complete overview about the topic. Despite the development of new antibiotics and vaccines, infectious diseases are still the third most common cause of morbidity, even in developed countries of Europe and North America. Antimicrobial antibiotics are used to treat bacterial infections through inhibition of bacterial growth or outright destruction of bacteria. Since the importance of antibiotic treatment has been recognised, the course will discuss what are antimicrobial antibiotics and how they work.

Antibiotic Stewardship (Coursera)

Antibiotics are among the most frequently prescribed classes of drugs and it is estimated that approximately 50% of antibiotic use, in both the outpatient and inpatient settings, is inappropriate. At the same time, in contrast to any other class of drugs, every antibiotic use has a potential public health consequence – inappropriate use may not harm only the individual patient, but contributes to societal harm by exerting an unnecessary selective pressure that may lead to antibiotic resistance among bacteria. This video based course will introduce learners to the basic principles of appropriate antibiotic use, demonstrate how to apply these principles to the management of common infections, and outline how to develop and maintain an antimicrobial stewardship program.
