Two Steps to Resuscitating Your Rough Draft (Skillshare)

Welcome to Two Steps to Resuscitating Your Rough Draft! If you have a rough draft of fiction, but don't know where to go from there, this class is for you. These two steps will have you thinking about how to take your rough draft to the next level. For this class, we will focus on two techniques for resuscitating your rough draft to create a more readable, publishable piece of fiction -- fiction that will connect with readers.

Self-editing is extremely difficult for most writers -- myself included -- so I am honored to share some of my content editing steps with you. I hope you find that this class helps you think about your rough draft in a new way and helps you take it to the next level.

In this class, you will learn:

  • The importance of moving from the subjective state of mind required for fiction writing to the objective state of mind required for editing.
  • How to conduct an emotional edit.
  • How to conduct a thematic edit.
  • The importance of leading your reader.

If you are a writer looking to submit to literary magazines, query agents, or self-publish, this class will help you bring your rough draft to the next level.
Just to be clear, this class does not include any grammatical editing, only content editing.
I look forward to reading your edits after class!

Project Description
Now for the difficult part: I am attaching a rough draft piece of flash fiction that I wrote. It is incredibly embarrassing to post such a raw, unedited piece of writing, but I want you to see where every writer begins. This document has my emotional edits (green) and thematic edits (blue) on them so that you may see my progression.
The emotions and themes that I found during my objective read-through and the ones I intended when I first wrote this piece of flash fiction are written in the header of the draft. I am including a clean copy of the second draft without the color edits, also. This copy is easier to read in case the colors bother you.
If you would like to post your rough draft with your emotional and/or thematic edits also, I would love to see your progression. As a writer, self-editing is the most difficult part of my job, and I am glad to share some of my process with you so that you may improve as a writer.

Color Theory Part 1- Understanding Color Relationships (Skillshare)

I am a high school graduate and soon to be a college student. I plan on studying artwork in college like I have done in high school. Creating artwork has always been a big part of my life. As a child when I started drawing I would spend my days doing that rather than playing video games like my friends. I have been making artwork for a far back as I can remember and that is why I am excited to share what I have learned.
