Deep renovation for energy efficient residential buildings (POK)

Offered by Politecnico di Milano,
Deep renovation for energy efficient residential buildings (POK)

As European buildings are responsible for 36% of CO2 emissions, the subject of deep renovation has become central to attain a climate-neutral EU by 2050. Hence, there is a compelling need for a new set of skills and knowledge to deliver deep renovation projects, that this course attempts to offer.

This course introduces the basics of deep renovation in residential buildings, though some modules apply to any kind of building. The student will be able to get a grasp of energy efficiency in buildings, and how to achieve a deep renovation project based on passive and active technologies.

This course is intended to teach and form a new generation of skilled practitioners for a sustainable built environment. It welcomes students of any built environment discipline and overall, to any professional in the construction sector (designers, engineers, architects, developers, contractors, facility managers).
To impact the uptake of the practice of deep renovation, the course has been framed within the European multilingual classification of Skills, Competences and Occupations ESCO, to ensure that the skills and knowledge on energy efficiency and deep renovation acquired in this course are identifiable across the European construction sector.
The course is structured in 6 weeks, with the following titles.
Week 1 – Towards 2050 Carbon Neutrality: the role of energy efficiency in buildings
Week 2 – Building envelope: prefabricated multifunctional façade
Week 3 – Building performance calculation and data analysis: definition, procedure, data flow and results representation and analysis
Week 4 – Deep renovation process: supporting decision
Week 5 – Integration of renewables: early design methodology for renewables
Week 6 – Lessons learnt from case studies
The weeks have different lessons within them, consisting mainly in videos completed with text, further reading, and quizzes.
In addition, it has been programmed a webinar (date to be confirmed) where most lecturers will be available for a Q&A (questions and answers) session.

clean-IT: Towards Sustainable Digital Technologies (openHPI)

Digitalization is a game changer in the pursuit of a sustainable future. The latest digital technologies and applications like cloud, AI, and mobile devices enable us to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals and reduce carbon emissions in many sectors. Yet computer systems themselves have an immense energy requirement for their countless devices, data centers, applications and global networks. To effectively reduce the carbon footprint of digitalization, it is necessary to apply algorithmic efficiency and sustainability by design as guiding principles in digital engineering.

Energy Efficient Programming (openHPI)

Efficiency in computer science often refers to the runtime or memory usage, that a certain algorithm needs to produce an output. However, efficiency can also describe the amount of energy, that is consumed by the hardware during the runtime of an algorithm. This course explains the relevant computer architecture components, as well as different coding techniques, that allow computer scientists to design and program energy efficient algorithms.

Sustainable building design in Africa (POK)

The course provides the main information about technological systems and tools for designing climate responsive buildings in Africa. The building sector is a major CO2 emitter, second only to the industry sector, accounting for 27% of global emissions, deriving both by the fossil fuel burnt for building operations viz. space heating, hot water production and cooking and by the one burnt for producing the electricity consumed. Moreover, almost 40% of the raw materials and energy produced worldwide are used in the building sector.
