Algorithms and Data Structures Capstone (edX)

Algorithms and Data Structures Capstone (edX)

Synthesize your knowledge of algorithms and biology to build your own software for solving a biological challenge. Building a fully-fledged algorithm to assemble genomes from DNA fragments on a real dataset is an enormous challenge with major demand in the multi-billion dollar biotech industry. In this capstone project, we will take the training wheels off and let you design your own optimized software program for genome sequencing.

Introduction to Object-Oriented Programming with Java II: Object-Oriented Programming and Algorithms (edX)

Learn the basics of object-oriented programming and algorithms. Students will build on the skills learned from “Introduction to Object-Oriented Programming with Java I: Foundations and Syntax Basics” and learn the basics of writing classes that serve as blueprints of concepts or objects that are represented in a programming problem. Students will leverage the concepts of inheritance, interfaces, and polymorphism to program reusability and flexibility in classes. Finally, students will gain experience walking through and analyzing algorithms that are applied on data (including objects) in many object-oriented programs.

Dynamic Programming: Applications In Machine Learning and Genomics (edX)

Learn how dynamic programming and Hidden Markov Models can be used to compare genetic strings and uncover evolution. If you look at two genes that serve the same purpose in two different species, how can you rigorously compare these genes in order to see how they have evolved away from each other?

How to Code: Complex Data (edX)

Learn how to design more complex programs, using new data structures, abstraction, and generative recursion. As your program requirements get more complex, you will find that simple additions to the design method make it easy to write well-structured and well-tested code that is easy to maintain. By learning how to capture common data and control structures using abstraction, your programs will get shorter and better tested.

Bipedalism: The Science of Upright Walking (edX)

Upright walking is a hallmark of being human. Explore how this unusual form of locomotion evolved and why. Have you ever wondered why humans walk on two legs rather than four? In this course, we will explore how science investigates this unusual form of locomotion. We will start our investigation by looking at the mechanics of upright walking in humans and comparing that to bipedal locomotion in large birds, bears, and apes.

Salmon, People, and Place (edX)

This course explores the relationships between salmon and people with an emphasis on the special ties of salmon to Indigenous peoples and to Alaska Natives in particular. No wild animal has more profoundly influenced the cultures and well-being of societies in North America than salmon. Salmon and people have been entwined in a relationship for millennia. This six-week course is an exploration and celebration of this relationship, as well as an examination of the current major issues, including habitat alterations, climate change, and management actions currently straining the relationship between salmon and salmon-dependent people.
